Cyril Aouizerate : Lyon, Friendly, fun and at times even a little bit brazen

My Only Lyon

Pioneer. Treasure hunter. Creator. As well as philosopher, businessman, urban planner... It’s hard to describe a man such as Cyril Aouizerate in a few words. One thing is for sure: he observes people and searches for human nature on every street corner, or through the pages of a book.

In some ways, it was by meeting the locals that he came to know their city.
Before the opening of his hotel establishment (which promises to be stylish, friendly and alternative) in Confluence next spring (note from the editor: which you can discover in our next magazine), he told us about Lyon and his favourite spots.

Tell us about your first time in Lyon.

Lyon has always intrigued me. Imagining a meeting between Jean Moulin and Daniel Cordier at the table of a bouchon restaurant awakened a kind of fascination in me during my post-adolescent period. Added to this the engagement and aura of Marc Bloch, and I imagined a city in which the idea of ‘resistance’ seemed fundamental. Naturally, the first time I came to Lyon, I went to eat at a restaurant where I would feel the history: Le Garet.

A bouchon ? That choice would seem to be at odds with your aesthetic tastes.

Innovative interior décors do appeal to me, but I also like places where you can imagine intrigues of the past. I like the exaggerated, old-fashioned feel in bouchons; it’s very pleasant.

Lyon is also a very mixed place. That creates a very singular atmosphere, and a very friendly, fun and sometimes even brazen energy. It reminds me of London here in some ways. The businessmen go for a drink in the pubs after work and then there is a metamorphosis in the city as the evening begins. That’s all part of Lyon too!

Do you like going out in Lyon?

I never like to plan things out before travelling; I prefer going with the flow. But nightlife here is interesting and I make the most of it when I can. I remember a 24-hour spur-of the-moment session with a friend from Lyon. It began with a meeting. That was followed by an extended lunch, before getting back to work. Then we kept on going: an aperitif, shop opening, meeting up with other friends... All of this took place in a welcoming atmosphere, with real connections, not at all like the “artificial” feeling you often get in some other cities. I love Lyon and, above all, I find the locals to be open to the world.

Restaurant Le Garet

"The sense of history is palpable at Le Garet.
The little table on the right is where Jean Moulin often came to eat."

Les Poupées Russes
Russian dolls: An iconic symbol which you can see soon at Mob Hotel Lyon

La Maison Mère
"I like hip hop and electronic music, so La Maison Mère (above) and Le Sucre (see page 12) are essentials for me".

Librairie Le Passage (bookshop)
"When I get a chance, I love browsing through the books for a few hours.
There’s a different relationship with time at Le Passage. Discussions between readers are more important than business."

Quais Du Polar
"I have two favourite events in Lyon.
The Nuits Sonores is unlike any other festival in the world and it has an incredibly international reputation. For a lover of literature such as myself, the Quais du Polar is a brilliant event."

L’Antiquaire
"L’Antiquaire is full of elegance and subtlety. The cocktails are expertly crafted."

Passage de l’Argue / Chapellerie Cartier
"I am a big fan of hats, and I find exceptional brands and creations in this covered passage right in the city centre
